Cardiac surgery, or cardiovascular surgery, is surgery on the heart or large blood vessels performed by a heart surgeon. Commonly used to treat complications of ischemic heart disease (eg, coronary artery bypass graft surgery). To correct congenital heart disease; or for the treatment of valvular heart disease of various causes, including endocarditis, rheumatic heart disease and atherosclerosis. This includes heart transplants.
